Saving to iCloud Drive

Instead of sending data to a server, Overland can save it as GeoJSON files in iCloud Drive.

Choose "iCloud Drive" as the destination on the Server URL screen. The files appear in the Overland folder in iCloud Drive, so they're available in the Files app and on your other devices without running a server. This needs you to be signed in to iCloud with iCloud Drive turned on for Overland.

Files

Each file is a GeoJSON FeatureCollection containing the same location records that would be sent to a server (see the API). There are two ways to split the data into files:

One per day
Every point is saved in a file for its UTC date, such as 2026/10/2026-10-19.geojson. Using UTC means a time zone change never skips or repeats a day. Trip records are saved in the file for the day the trip ended.
Trips only
Only points recorded during a trip are saved, in one file per trip in the Trips folder, named by when the trip started, such as Trips/2026-10-19T13-00-01Z.geojson. The trip record written when the trip ends is saved in the same file. Points recorded outside a trip are not saved.

Points are saved in batches using the same send interval and batch size settings as a server. The "Owntracks" logging mode doesn't apply to iCloud Drive, so points are always saved as GeoJSON. If iCloud Drive isn't available, points stay in the queue on the phone until they can be saved.
